Employee Relations in Digital Age
World has undergone far-reaching cultural, social, and economic changes based on the increasing dominance of digital technologies. Our Society, culture, and values all have been highly impacted.
Organisations must adapt employee relations strategies to align with the changing needs and expectations of their employees.
Generally, employee relations practices can be categorised into three types, which are pre-hire practices, staffing, and post-hire practices (Manzoor et al., 2019).
Technology has had a profound impact on every aspect of employee relations, from recruiting and on boarding to communication and performance management. Technology offers solutions to increase the engagement level of employees. (Forbes, 2019)
Some of the key changes include:
- The rise of remote work: Technology has made it possible for employees to work from anywhere in the world. This has led to a more flexible and diverse workforce, but it has also created new challenges for managing employee relations.
- The increasing use of social media: Social media has become an essential tool for communication and collaboration, but it can also be a source of conflict and reputational damage. Companies must have clear policies in place for social media use.
- The growing importance of data: Data is now being used to make informed decisions about every aspect of employee relations. This can be helpful, but it also raises concerns about privacy and employee surveillance.
How to Build Strong Employee Relations in the Digital Age
Maintaining good employee relations is much easier, and team members are generally happier when companies have systems in place to ensure that employees and leaders are engaged in regular feedback and communication, development opportunities, recognition, and wellness. ( J Cieslinski,2023)
In the digital age, it is more important than ever to build strong employee relations.
- Create a culture of trust and transparency: Employees need to feel like they can trust their employer and that their concerns will be heard. This is especially important in the digital age, where information can be easily shared and spread.
- Foster open communication: Companies need to create an environment where employees feel comfortable communicating with their managers and colleagues. This includes providing multiple channels for communication, such as email, chat, and video conferencing.
- Use technology to enhance employee engagement: There are a number of technology tools that can be used to enhance employee engagement such as social learning platforms and employee recognition software.
- Provide opportunities for training and development: Employees need to feel like they are constantly learning and growing. Companies should provide opportunities for training and development, both online and in person.
- Invest in employee well-being: Employees need to feel physically and mentally healthy in order to be productive. Companies should invest in employee well-being programs, such as wellness initiatives, ergonomic workstations, and mental health counselings.
The Future of Employee Relations
The digital age is still in its early stages, and it is likely to continue to transform employee relations in the years to come. In the artificial intelligence (AI) era, finding the right balance between AU and the human touch in employee relations can lead to numerous benefits for both employees and the organisation as a whole. By leveraging AI to automate repetitive tasks, employees can focus on more complex and strategic aspects of their roles. This not only increases productivity but also allows employees to tap into their creativity and problem-solving skills. (linkedin, 2023)
New trends that companies should be aware of:
- The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and automation
- The increasing importance of cyber security
- The growing demand for personalised employee experiences
By keeping up with these trends, companies can ensure that their employee relations practices are ready for the future.

ReplyDeleteDefinitely, technology has its advantages. More so there are challenges that employers need to be aware. While in other Western and Asian Countries the advances and implementation of technologies at advanced stage, in Sri Lanka we are in very early stages. We need to bridge gap. There should enough education, awareness and training programs to be conducted so that employees can take advantage of these technologies to build better relationship with their employees.
ReplyDeleteOther aspect, employers need to be mindful of worklife balance. Employees' physical and mental wellbeing is of utmost importance. Other challenge is surveillance and monitoring (CIPD, 2020) .
These things need to be considered when thinking of using technology to connect with employees.
